Fill In Your Gaps With Dental Implants

Missing teeth? Too embarrassed to smile? Have crowns, bridges or dentures? Sick of denture paste? Tired of your dentures shifting while eating or talking? If this happens to be you, you should consider a more permanent solution such as dental implants.

Who Can Get Dental Implants?

Since dental implants are connected via the bone and are dependent on gum health, it is important that you are in decent general and oral health before opting to get the procedure. Things that are considered when determining whether you are a good candidate for dental implants include: gum health and whether your jaw bones will be able to bear either type of implant.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Because every patient’s needs differ, the procedure starts with a customized treatment plan where issues are identified and a desired outcome is outlined. Customized plans can call for the replacement of a single tooth, several, or all of your teeth. Once the plan is in place, the implantation process begins with a tooth root implant. Dental implants restore your dental roots with artificial tooth roots. These artificial roots are placed into the jaw to support the implanted teeth. Based on the best course of action, there are two types of implants that can be used. If the implant needs to be placed in the bone, the endosteal implant is the best option. This is the most common implant to be used, and is more commonly used in cases where patients are replacing bridges or removable dentures. With this implant, screws, cylinders or blades can be used to place one or more prosthetic teeth. In a case where a patient doesn’t have the bone height to support endosteal implants, a subperiosteal implant is selected. These implants are positioned on the top of the jaw with a metal structure going through the gum to support the prosthetic teeth. When a single tooth needs to be replaced, it can be achieved by using a crown. In the event that several teeth need to be replaced, you can opt to have your dental bridge implanted to support the prosthetic teeth instead of having a removable bridge. Replacing all of your teeth would consist of a full bridge or denture implant. Sometimes, it may be necessary to have a sinus augmentation or a ridge modification to ensure a successful implantation. Sinus augmentations are necessary when the bone quantity and quality is poor. This is corrected by raising the sinus floor and fixing the bone. Ridge modifications allow for successful implantation by lifting the gum away from the ridge to build it up and fill in any jaw or bone deformity.

How To Care For Dental Implants

Great oral health is important regardless of whether you have your natural born teeth or whether you have artificial or prosthetic teeth. There is no special care that needs to be implemented outside of the normal brushing and flossing. Be sure to keep any follow up appointments so that you can ensure that your gums and new teeth can stay healthy.

Benefits of Dental Implants

An impressive benefit of dental implants is the fact that it is the only solution that is closest to your own natural teeth. Not only do they look real, but dental implants work just like your natural grown teeth. With dental implants, you don’t have to worry about the restrictions that come with other dental solutions. More impressively, dental implants are long-lasting and don’t require a lot of maintenance outside of your regular care. Bridges, dentures, crowns, and other options have to be replaced after so long regardless of how great you care for them.
