Prepping For Dental Fillings: 3 Tips to Keep In Mind

Our teeth are extremely important and should be properly cared for from the time we are young to our elderly years. Unfortunately, not everybody is fully aware of how to keep their teeth clean and strong for extended periods of time. Currently, at least one in five Americans has at least one untreated cavity.

One of the reasons so many people aren’t having their cavities taken care of is general fear of the dentist. People think every broken tooth or cavity will result in painful, invasive, and catastrophic surgery — but that’s simply not the case. If you have a cavity or two, you’ll likely only need dental fillings, which are not that scary at all.

Here are some tips that should help you prepare for any upcoming dental fillings you might have:

  • Talk to your dentist beforehand — You’re never going to feel at ease with your upcoming dental treatment if you ignore your symptoms and neglect to speak with your dentist. Make sure you’re visiting the dentist at least twice a year and be sure to discuss any next steps that need to be made.
  • Talk to a friend or family member about giving you a ride — Depending on what anesthetic you and your dentist decided on using, you may not be able to drive yourself home after your filling procedure. It can be a little intimidating waiting around the dentist’s office by yourself so it’s best to have someone either go with you or be ready to pick you up right way. You’d do the same for your friend, so they will probably be more than willing to help you out.
  • Prep your meals the night before — Just because your mouth feels a little numb for a day or two doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat during that time. You’re going to need to eat to regain some of your energy so think about purchasing some soft, lukewarm foods that you can still enjoy without aggravating your fillings following your appointment.
